Children in the adult system
Children prosecuted, sentenced and imprisoned as though they were adults.
Every state allows children to be tried as adults in some circumstances, and in several a child can still receive a sentence that will keep them in prison for most of a natural life. The Supreme Court has limited the harshest of these sentences; the limits are applied unevenly, and many people sentenced as children before those rulings have never had them applied at all.
