About CounterInjustice
What we are, how we work, and what we will not claim.
What we are
CounterInjustice organises community groups, attorneys and individuals united against injustice — to counter injustice. We take on systemic policies that go unaddressed and work to change them, through litigation where litigation can reach, and through legislatures and clemency where it cannot.
How we actually work
Every campaign is one named injustice, one theory of how to change it, and a list of roles that need filling. Members sign up by what they can do and where they can do it — for attorneys, the states they are admitted in; for groups and volunteers, the states they can organise in. A project lead matches people to roles from there.
We run both tracks at once on purpose. An individual case can free one person. It takes a body of cases, and people organised behind them, to change the rule that put them all there. Neither substitutes for the other, and we tell volunteers which of the two a given campaign is realistically likely to achieve.
What we will not claim
We will not tell you a case is likely to win when the precedent runs against it. Our first campaign asks the courts to find a life-without-parole sentence for a nine-dollar theft unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court has upheld a sentence very like it before. We say so on the campaign page, because a volunteer who finds that out later will rightly wonder what else we left out.
We are not a law firm. We do not give legal advice, and nothing here creates an attorney–client relationship. See the legal disclaimer.
